Discourse Analysis in Communication

DCOM 705 | Currently Offered: 2nd Semester, AY 2024-2025

Course Description
This course introduces students to a multimodal social semiotic approach to Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), emphasizing how meaning is constructed across different modes of communication, including text, images, and other media representations. The course explores social semiotics as a theoretical and analytical framework, focusing on its relationship with discourse, power, and society. Special attention is given to CDS applications in the Philippines, along with methodological critiques of CDS. Through lectures, workshops, and independent research, students will design, implement, and critique their own CDS projects, applying multimodal analysis to real-world discourse phenomena.
